Breathe
by Sherice Blair
No one tells you to breathe
when you are standing on the edge
of a precipice frozen like stone
looking into the abyss of pain.
No one tells you to breathe
when you are on the stage
holding a crown with a concrete smile
plastered on your face,
fighting to keep it all together.
No one tells you to breathe
when the world is falling apart.
The deafening silence seems to speak volumes
about pathways not taken. Life not lived.
The doors left closed. The doors remain unentered.
No one tells you to breathe
as the sun sets on your last sunrise,
darkness forever,
the cold wind whispers your name.
No one tells you to breathe
